Pigment/Peroxidase Analysis (Chemicals and Instructions)

In this lab, students choose a variety of vegetables, extract the peroxidase using cell lysis via mortar and pestle, and run a full electrophoresis gel against the proteins Hemoglobin-Albumin and Cytochrome C. The gel is then stained with a quick color development buffer. Students finish by making a chart of isoelectric point vs. distance migrated. This sub-2 hour experiment is designed to accommodate 16 students working in pairs and includes: Pipettes, Microcentrifuge tubes, Color Development Buffer, 10g of Agarose, Electrophoresis Buffer, Hemoglobin-Albumin, Cytochrome C, Extraction Buffer Concentrate, Hydrogen Peroxide, and Chloronapthol.
